HOW WE GOT HERE 

“I just want to play a new song,” she said with a disappointed frown on her face that spoke volumes.  “I don’t know which chords to play or which ones sound good together.”

Determined, we began to explore basic music theory . . . pictures, arrows, definitions, fill in the blanks, charts, graphs – you name it!  Everything EXCEPT a listening ear and a perceiving heart. 

I could have asked her to tell me more.  I should have asked her if she could play any song flawlessly what would she play.  It would be nice if I could REcall some of my former students and share what I now know.

Her question sent me back to the drawing board, as I brainstormed multiple ways to explain which chords sound good together.  It clicked as the simplicity of music revealed itself.  What a moment! 

Her eyes widened as she rolled the Chord Dice.  “IIIIIIIII GET IT!” 
With a beaming smile and excited fingers, she fret the first chord, looked up, and grinned at me.
